Change your Nintendo Account region to Malaysia

What you lose, the exact steps, and why the console itself doesn't need a region change.

5 min read · Updated 2 Nov 2026

Malaysia got its own Nintendo eShop, with ringgit prices, on 18 November 2025. Before that, many Malaysian players made accounts set to Hong Kong, the US or Japan. Your eShop always follows your Nintendo Account's country. You change it on Nintendo's website, not on the console.

Before you change

  • Spend your eShop balance first. It does not carry over to the new region, and Nintendo says remaining funds may be permanently lost. Nintendo won't let you change the region until the balance is used.
  • Payment cards: Nintendo warns that a card issued in one region may not work in another region's eShop.
  • Child accounts (12 and under) can't be changed one by one. When the family group's admin changes their region, the children's accounts follow.
  • Pre-orders and Nintendo Switch Online: Nintendo's region-change pages don't cover them. Let pre-orders complete first, and ask Nintendo support if you have a membership you're unsure about.

Steps

  1. Go to accounts.nintendo.com and sign in.
  2. Select User Info.
  3. In the Profile section, select Change.
  4. Choose Malaysia under Country/region.
  5. Select Save changes, read the notice, then select I agree.
  6. The next time you open Nintendo eShop on your console, it opens the Malaysian eShop.

What about the console's region?

For games, you don't need to change anything on the console. Game cards from any region play on Switch 1 and on the standard Switch 2, and the eShop you see depends on your account, not on the console. The one exception is the Japan-only Switch 2, which only links accounts set to Japan.

To change the menu language, go to System Settings → System → Language.

Is switching to Malaysia worth it?

  • For: prices in ringgit, and you no longer need foreign eShop cards.
  • Against: you lose any unspent balance, and some games aren't sold in every region's eShop. For example, Story Mode marks games that are not on the Malaysian eShop.
  • Check which payment methods the Malaysian eShop accepts on your console before you switch.
TipBefore you change, note your current balance and any pre-orders, so you know what to use up or wait for first.
