An eShop card (sold as a physical card or a digital code) adds money to your Nintendo Account. You then use that money to buy games and DLC in the eShop.

The one rule: the card must match your account's regionA US eShop card only works on a Nintendo Account set to the United States. A Japanese card only works on a Japan account, and so on. Check your account's country before you buy.

Step 1: check your account's country

Sign in at accounts.nintendo.com and look under User Info. On the console, the currency of your balance in Nintendo eShop also tells you.

Step 2: pick the matching card

Your account is set toBuy
MalaysiaA card or code clearly labelled for Malaysia. If no trusted seller has one, pay directly in the eShop with a payment method it accepts
United StatesA US eShop card (USD)
Hong KongA Hong Kong eShop card (HKD)
JapanA Japanese eShop card (JPY)

Thinking of moving your account to Malaysia? Spend your balance first. It doesn't carry over. See changing your account region.

Step 3: buy from a seller you trust

  • Use official or mall stores, or well-known digital top-up sellers. Check the seller's ratings and how long the shop has been open.
  • Be careful with codes priced far below face value. They are a common scam.
  • Never give anyone your Nintendo Account password. No real top-up needs it.
  • Most sellers can't refund a code once it has been sent, so check the region before you pay.

Step 4: redeem the code

  1. Connect your console to the internet and open Nintendo eShop.
  2. Choose the account you want to add the money to.
  3. Select Redeem Code on the left.
  4. Enter the 16-character download code (no hyphens). Don't enter the control number printed next to it.
  5. Select Confirm. The balance is added straight away.

Away from your console? Nintendo also lets you redeem codes on its website after signing in.
