Take care of your Switch and dock

Heat, humidity, scratch-free docking, the right charger and what to know about third-party docks.

Malaysia is hot and humid, which is hard on any electronics. A few habits keep your console, dock and battery healthy for years.

Keep it cool

  • Nintendo advises against using Switch and Switch 2 where the temperature is above 35°C.
  • Keep the dock's vents clear. Don't put it in a closed TV cabinet or squeeze it in behind the TV.
  • Never leave the console in a parked car. It gets far hotter than 35°C very quickly.
  • Don't charge or play it under a blanket or on a soft bed where the vents get covered.

Dock it without scratches

  • Slide the console straight down into the dock with the screen facing the front of the dock. Don't drag it in at an angle.
  • A tempered-glass screen protector takes the scratches instead of the screen.
  • Wipe dust and grit out of the dock's slot now and then.

Use the right dock and charger

  • Use the dock that came with your console. The Switch 2 dock is not compatible with the original Switch.
  • Charge with the official AC adapter, or a reputable USB-C Power Delivery charger from a known brand.
  • Third-party docks: Switch 2 system update 21.0.0 (November 2025) stopped some third-party docks from working. Some makers released fixes afterwards. Nintendo says it does not intend to block legal third-party docks. If you buy one, pick a brand that publishes firmware updates, and check reviews after each system update.

Cleaning

  1. Turn the console off.
  2. Wipe the screen and body with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
  3. For stubborn marks, use a cloth that is slightly damp with water. Don't spray anything directly onto the console.
  4. Turn the console off before you take out or put in a microSD card.

Humidity and storage

  • Store the console in a case, with game cards in a card holder.
  • Moving from a cold air-conditioned room into hot, humid air can cause condensation. Give the console a few minutes to adjust before you turn it on.
  • A sachet of silica gel in your storage box helps keep moisture down.
Keep the system updatedSystem updates bring fixes and new features. If you use a third-party dock, check its maker's notes before and after updating.
