Nintendo Switch 2: is it worth upgrading?

What you gain, what it costs beyond the console, and who should wait.

6 min read · Updated 1 Nov 2026

Switch 2 launched worldwide in June 2025 and in Malaysia in July 2025. If you already own a Switch, here is what actually changes.

What you gain

  • A much better screen: 7.9-inch 1080p LCD with HDR and up to 120Hz, versus 720p on every Switch 1 model.
  • Far more power: smoother frame rates and up to 4K on a TV.
  • Switch 2 exclusives such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.
  • 256GB storage built in, versus 32GB or 64GB.
  • Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically and work as a mouse in supported games, plus GameChat for voice and video chat.
  • Your Switch 1 games come with you: most Switch 1 game cards and downloads play on Switch 2, and some get paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades with better visuals or extra content.

The hidden costs

  • New accessories: cases, screen protectors and docks for Switch 1 generally do not fit.
  • New memory card: extra storage must be microSD Express. Your old microSD card cannot hold Switch 2 games.
  • Battery estimate is shorter: about 2–6.5 hours, versus 4.5–9 hours on V2 and OLED.
  • Game-key cards: some Switch 2 games on shelves need a download before you can play. See physical vs digital.
