Top 10 must-have Switch accessories

What to buy first, in order — and the one compatibility check for each.

Ranked by how much trouble each one saves you. The most important rule: Lite, Switch, OLED and Switch 2 are all different sizes, so match the accessory to your exact model.

  1. Tempered glass screen protector. Cheap insurance for the most expensive part. Check the size: 5.5" Lite, 6.2" Switch, 7" OLED, 7.9" Switch 2.
  2. Hard carrying case. Protects the console in a bag and keeps game cards together. A Switch or OLED case is too small for Switch 2.
  3. Memory card. Digital games and updates fill internal storage fast. Switch 1 models use standard microSD; Switch 2 needs microSD Express. How to choose.
  4. A comfortable controller. For TV play, a Pro Controller is much easier on the hands than a single Joy-Con. Compare controllers.
  5. A second controller. Needed for most two-player games if you don't want to share one Joy-Con each.
  6. Thumb grips. Small silicone caps that improve grip on analog sticks. Very cheap.
  7. Game card holder. Game cards are tiny and easy to lose. Switch and Switch 2 cards fit the same holders.
  8. Headset. A wired 3.5mm headset works on every model without pairing.
  9. Charging station or power bank. A Joy-Con charging station for party nights, or a USB-C Power Delivery power bank for travel.
  10. Second dock (Switch / OLED only). Handy for a second TV. Check the listing names your model; Switch Lite cannot output to TV at all.
Starting from zero?A starter bundle (case + glass + grips) for your model covers items 1, 2 and 6 in one purchase.
