Physical game cartridge vs digital games
Resale value, storage, convenience — and what Switch 2 game-key cards change.
Switch games come as small game cards (cartridges) or as downloads from the Nintendo eShop, which officially launched in Malaysia in November 2025 with prices in ringgit. Here is how to decide.
Physical game cards
- Resell or trade when you finish, which lowers the real cost.
- Lend to friends or share between consoles in the same house.
- Less storage needed — the game runs from the card, though updates still download.
- Downsides: you carry cards around, swap them to change games, and small cards are easy to lose.
Digital downloads
- Always with you — switch games without swapping cards.
- eShop sales can make older games cheaper than physical copies.
- Downsides: no resale, games are tied to your Nintendo Account, and you need storage space. Most people with a digital library buy a memory card.
Switch 2 game-key cards
Some Switch 2 games are sold as game-key cards. They look like normal game cards but contain a key rather than the full game. Insert one and the console downloads the game.
- You need an internet connection and enough free space for the first download.
- After that the game runs offline (unless the game itself is online), but the card must stay in the console to play.
- Because the key is on the card and not tied to an account, you can still lend or resell it.
- Game-key card cases are marked with a notice, so check the box before you buy if you want the full game on the card.
