How many players?
How do you want to play?
What controllers do you have?
A Switch or Switch 2 comes with one pair of Joy-Con. Switch Lite has none to share.
Who are you playing with? (optional)
Joy-Con, explained
The words people mix up most, and what they mean for multiplayer.
One Joy-Con
Half of the pair. Held sideways, it's a small controller for one player, but only in games that support it.
A pair of Joy-Con
The left and right Joy-Con together. Every Switch and Switch 2 comes with one pair.
One player, full pair
One person uses both halves (attached, in a grip or one in each hand). Some games need this for every player.
Two players, one pair
Split the pair: one Joy-Con each. Great for Mario Kart and Smash, but never assume a game allows it.
Pro Controller
A full controller for one player. Works in most games, but not in motion-only games like Switch Sports.
Two consoles
Some games (like Splatoon 3) have no split-screen: each player needs their own Switch and copy.
