JRPG · Turn-based
The classic Japanese RPG. Mostly standalone adventures — plus one legendary trilogy.
A long-running, friendly turn-based RPG series famous for its cheerful monsters.
Most games are a hero's journey to defeat a great evil. Each numbered game is usually a separate world.
A silent hero you name, plus memorable companions in each game.
Easy to learn, warm in tone, and full of exploring.
Mostly not. Dragon Quest III, I and II form the Erdrick trilogy, played in the story order III → I → II.
One to start: Dragon Quest XI S or III HD-2D.
Start with XI S or the Erdrick trilogy.
Story order lists games by when their events happen inside the story. Beginner order is the order we recommend playing them, which is often closer to release order because later games are written assuming you played earlier ones. Playing in story order can spoil twists or start you on an older, harder game.
A young man discovers he is the reborn Luminary, a legendary hero, and is branded a dark omen by the king.
On your 16th birthday you set out to defeat the Archfiend Baramos, as your father tried before you.
Two adventures in one: a lone descendant of a legendary hero faces the Dragonlord, then his own descendants rise against a new evil.
On the only island in the world, a fisherman's son and his friends restore lost islands by travelling to their past.
The young half-demon Psaro recruits monsters to overthrow his father, the Master of Monsters.
A young builder washes up on an island and rebuilds the world block by block.
